The Matthew Peter ’06, MA ’07 Scholarship for Public Service

We thank you for generously supporting this endowed scholarship, being lovingly established in memory of Matthew Thomas Peter.

Matthew, who earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in political science at the University at Albany, spent his adult life working to make Albany better. After graduating, he worked in a multitude of roles in the Governor’s Office, the State Department of Taxation and Finance and the State Senate. Matthew then ran Kathy Sheehan’s inaugural race for mayor and later became her first Chief of Staff. In 2016, he became Executive Director of the Albany Parking Authority where he took pride in making it profitable and a vehicle for improving conditions in the city. Matthew was also the 6th Ward Leader for the City of Albany Democratic Party Committee and served on the boards of Park Playhouse, Capitalize Albany and Albany County Visitors Bureau.

The Matthew Peter ’06, MA ’07 Scholarship for Public Service will provide support to undergraduate or graduate student(s) pursuing a degree through the University at Albany’s Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy. The recipients will demonstrate a commitment to a career in public service and show evidence of leadership. Recipients should possess a GPA of at least 3.0.
